During Republican times the breed was very much neglected due to socil prejudice and was nearly extinct. Not until 1955 that a german dermathologist took interest in them and studied them and aroused a new interest in them. In 1997,an italian doctor, Ermano Maniero, after many years got the race accepted and registered at the Federacion Cynologic International. In 1999 the Peruvian goverment declared the race as a national heritage and protected them by law.
